Are you trying to decide whether bringing your car to Purdue University is actually worth it? Between parking permits, busy campus streets and the convenience of being able to leave West Lafayette whenever you want, there is a lot to consider before moving in.

For students living off campus at Rambler Riverfront, having a car can definitely make life easier in some situations, but it can also come with extra costs and responsibilities.

Below, we are breaking down the biggest pros and cons of bringing your car to Purdue so you can decide what makes the most sense for your lifestyle.

Should I Bring My Car to Purdue?

For some Purdue students, bringing a car is essential. For others, it ends up sitting in the parking garage most of the semester. West Lafayette is fairly walkable around campus, and Purdue students also have access to public transportation options like Purdue Campus Transit and CityBus.

At the same time, having a car gives you flexibility that can make everyday life much easier.

Before deciding, think about your schedule, how often you travel off campus and where you plan to live.

Pro: Access to the Rest of West Lafayette & Lafayette

One of the biggest benefits of having a car at Purdue is the ability to easily get beyond campus. While there are plenty of spots within walking distance of Purdue, having a car makes it much easier to reach grocery stores, shopping centers, restaurants and entertainment throughout West Lafayette and Lafayette.

Whether you are making a Target run, heading to the grocery store for the week, or grabbing dinner with friends away from Chauncey Hill, having your own transportation saves time and makes errands significantly easier.

Con: Pricey Parking Passes

One of the biggest downsides to bringing a car to Purdue is the cost of parking. Parking permits, garage parking and metered parking can add up quickly throughout the school year. Purdue parking permits are virtual and tied directly to your license plate.

Depending on where you live and park, you may also need to factor in apartment parking fees or occasional guest parking costs for visitors.

Pro: Transportation Home

For many Purdue students from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio or nearby Midwest states, having a car makes spontaneous weekend trips home much easier. Instead of coordinating rides or purchasing bus tickets, you can leave campus whenever your schedule allows.

Having a car is also helpful during move-in, move-out and holiday breaks when you may need to transport larger items back and forth from home.

Con: Parking Availability can be Limited

Another common frustration for Purdue students is limited parking availability near campus. During busy class hours or major campus events, finding convenient parking can sometimes be difficult.

Students often end up walking farther than expected from their parking spot to class, which can make having a car feel less convenient than anticipated.

Pro: More Flexibility for Off-Campus Jobs & Internships

A car can be especially helpful if you have an internship, part-time job or extracurricular activities located outside of walking distance from campus. While Purdue’s bus system is helpful, certain work schedules or locations can be difficult to access without your own transportation.

Students with internships in Lafayette, research positions off campus or jobs with late-night shifts often find having a car much more convenient.

Con: You May Not Use Your Car as Much as You Think

Many students initially assume they will use their car constantly, only to realize most of their daily routine happens within walking distance. Purdue’s campus is highly walkable, and many students rely on biking, scooters, rideshares, Purdue Campus Transit or CityBus to get around instead.

If your classes, apartment, friends and favorite study spots are all near campus, your car may sit parked for days at a time.

Pro: Ability to Live Further Off Campus

Many students choose to live off campus after freshman year for more independence, additional space, and upgraded amenities. If you are living slightly farther from the center of campus, a car can help make commuting quicker and more convenient.

At Rambler Riverfront, residents are still close to Purdue University while also having easier access to the surrounding West Lafayette and Lafayette areas.

Purdue Transportation Alternatives

Even without a car, Purdue students still have several transportation options available:

  • CityBus routes throughout West Lafayette and Lafayette
  • Purdue Campus Transit routes through West Lafayette
  • Walking and biking paths around campus
  • Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft
  • Electric scooters and bikes
  • Carpooling with roommates and friends

For students living near campus, these options are often enough to handle everyday transportation needs.

Ultimately, whether bringing a car to Purdue is worth it depends on your lifestyle. If you frequently travel home, work off campus, or like exploring beyond West Lafayette, having a car can be incredibly convenient.

However, if most of your routine stays close to campus, you may find that you do not need one as much as you expected.
