Freshmen at Purdue have several housing options, including on-campus residence halls, off-campus student apartments and off-campus traditional apartments. While first-year students are encouraged to live on-campus, some students choose to live off campus for added independence, different amenities or alternative living arrangements.

What’s the difference between on-campus and off-campus housing?

Here are the main options to consider for your freshmen year:

On-Campus Residence Halls

Purdue University offers a variety of residence hall options across campus. Most freshman students live in traditional double rooms with community bathrooms, though some residence halls also offer singles, triples, suite-style rooms and rooms with shared or private bathrooms.

Living on campus includes access to Purdue dining courts and requires a meal plan for most first-year students. Residence halls are also located close to academic buildings, libraries, dining options and campus resources like the CoRec and WALC. Many residence halls additionally offer Living Learning Communities, which allow students with shared academic or personal interests to live together.

Off-Campus Student Apartments

Off-campus student apartments are designed specifically for college students and typically offer more independent-style living. These communities often include features such as private bedrooms, furnished units, study spaces, fitness centers and in-unit laundry.

Unlike residence halls, student apartments usually include full kitchens, allowing students to cook their own meals rather than rely on dining courts or meal plans. Most student apartments also operate on 12-month leases instead of Purdue’s academic-year housing contracts.

Off-Campus Traditional Apartments

Traditional apartments are another off-campus option for Purdue students. Unlike student-focused communities, these apartments are generally designed for a wider range of residents, including families and working professionals.

Traditional apartments may offer fewer student-oriented amenities, but they can provide quieter environments, flexible layouts and a variety of price points. Some students prefer traditional apartments if they want a more residential atmosphere or plan to stay in the West Lafayette area year-round.

In order to decide which housing option is best for you, you should weigh the pros and cons of each option and how they fit your lifestyle.

Do you enjoy cooking your own meals, or would you rather rely on a meal plan during your first year? If you prefer convenience you don’t want to worry about groceries or cooking, on-campus housing may be the better fit. If you like having your own kitchen and flexibility to cook, an apartment like Rambler Riverfront might be a better option.

You should also consider how much privacy you want. On-campus dorms typically involve sharing a bedroom and possibly a bathroom, while apartments often offer private bedrooms and bathrooms, giving you more personal space.

Location is another important factor. If you plan to be heavily involved on campus and want to be just steps away from classes and dining courts, living on-campus may be more convenient. However, if you’re looking for a balance of independence and accessibility, most off-campus student apartments like Rambler Riverfront are located just a short walk or bike ride from Purdue’s campus.

Lastly, think about the type of community you want to be surrounded by. On-campus residence halls are primarily filled with freshmen, which makes it easier to meet people in your class and adjust to college life. Off-campus apartments often have a mix of underclassmen and upperclassmen, which can help you build connections across different years and expand your network.

When should I start looking for housing?

If you’ve already confirmed your acceptance to Purdue, you should start looking at housing as soon as possible. With thousands of incoming students each year, both on-campus and off-campus housing options can be competitive.

If you’re interested in living in an off-campus apartment like Rambler Riverfront, you should start contacting leasing offices early. Many student apartments begin signing leases up to 12 months in advance, and the most popular floor plans often fill up quickly.

If you’re planning to live on-campus, Purdue’s housing application typically opens in the spring before your freshman year. The earlier you submit your application, the better your chances of securing your preferred residence hall and room type.

How much does housing cost near Purdue?

On-Campus Dorms

On-campus housing rates vary depending on the residence hall and room layout. For a 9-month contract, you can expect to pay approximately $5,000 to $12,000 per year. These rates typically include your room, all utilities and your meal plan.

Off-Campus Apartments

The cost of off-campus apartments can vary based on location, floor plan and amenities. At off-campus apartments, rates typically range from about $900 to $1,500+ per person, per month. Apartments include access to amenities like a fitness center, study spaces and social lounges, but you will be responsible for groceries and cooking your own meals.

How do I find roommates as a freshman?

Your roommate will be a big part of your freshman year experience, unless you choose a single dorm or studio apartment. The way you find roommates will depend on the type of housing you choose.

If you decide on an on-campus residence hall, you’ll have an option to request a specific roommate or be matched with someone based on your lifestyle preferences through Purdue Housing.

If you choose to live in an off-campus apartment like Rambler Riverfront, you can either sign a lease with roommates you already know or be matched with other students through the property’s roommate matching process. Many apartments offer private bedrooms with shared common spaces, while some offer shared bedrooms to help reduce costs.

If you don’t already have someone in mind, social media is one of the best ways to find a roommate. Purdue Class Facebook groups and Instagram pages are great places to connect with other incoming freshmen. Create a post introducing yourself, where you want to live, your interests, and what you’re looking for in a roommate. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others, you’ll be surprised how many people are in the same situation.

What are my next steps?

Once you’ve decided which housing option is best for you, it’s time to secure your spot.

On-Campus Housing:

Start by completing your Purdue housing application as soon as it opens. Once you receive your housing contract, review and sign it, then submit your preferences for residence hall, room type, and roommates. You’ll then participate in the room selection process later in the summer.

Off-Campus Housing:

Begin by creating a list of apartments you’re interested in, such as Rambler Riverfront. Schedule tours or contact the leasing office to learn more about pricing, amenities and availability. Once you’ve chosen the property that’s right for you, you’ll complete an application, sign your lease and pay any required fees to secure your apartments.
