What is Renter’s Insurance?

Generally, renter’s insurance covers damage to your personal property caused by theft, fire and certain natural disasters or other unexpected events.
However, not all renter’s insurance policies are the same. It’s important to review your specific policy to understand exactly what it includes. Some policies focus primarily on personal property (the belongings you own), while others include personal liability coverage (which can help cover legal costs if you’re responsible for someone getting injured in your apartment).
Understanding the details of your coverage ensures you’re protected in the situations that matter most.
Do You Need Renter’s Insurance?

The answer is almost always, “Yes!”
While renter’s insurance is not required by Indiana law, many landlords and student housing communities in West Lafayette require students to carry it. They may also set a minimum coverage amount, especially for liability protection.
At Rambler Riverfront, residents are required to maintain renter’s insurance with a minimum of $100,000 in liability coverage. This is a standard requirement at many student communities near Purdue.
Many students assume their landlord’s insurance will cover damages to their belongings, but that’s rarely the case. A landlord’s policy typically covers the building itself, not your personal items.
For example, imagine if a pipe bursts in your apartment and damages your laptop, textbooks and furniture. Even if the issue wasn’t your fault, without renter’s insurance, you would likely have to replace those items out-of-pocket.
Renter’s insurance protects your personal belongings so that if the unexpected happens, you’re not left covering the full cost on your own.
What Does Renter’s Insurance Cover?
Renter’s insurance provides financial protection while you’re living in a rental property. Most policies include three main types of coverage:
1. Personal Property Coverage
This protects your belongings like your laptop, clothing, furniture and school supplies from covered events such as a fire, theft or certain types of water damage.
2. Personal Liability Coverage
This protects you if you’re held responsible for injuries or property damage. For example, if a guest slips and falls in your apartment or you accidentally cause damage to someone else’s property, liability coverage can help pay for medical bills or legal expenses.
3. Additional Living Expenses (Loss of Use) Coverage
If your apartment becomes unlivable due to a covered event, this coverage can help pay for temporary housing, food, transportation and other necessary expenses while repairs are being made.
Each policy can vary, so be sure to carefully review what is and isn’t included before choosing a plan.
How Much Does Renter’s Insurance Cost?
As of 2026, renter’s insurance in West Lafayette typically ranges from about $10 to $15 per month.
The exact cost depends on factors such as:
- The amount of coverage you select
- The value of your personal belongings
- The insurance provider you choose
- Your deductible
A deductible isn’t what you pay each month; that’s your premium. Your deductible is the amount you agree to pay out of pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in after a covered claim.
For example, if you have a $500 deductible and need $2,000 of coverage for a broken laptop, you would pay the first $500, and your insurance would cover the remaining amount (up to your policy limits).
In general, choosing a higher deductible can lower your monthly premium, while a lower deductible usually means a higher monthly cost. The right balance depends on your budget and how much you’d realistically be able to pay upfront if something unexpected happens.
For most Purdue students, renter’s insurance is an affordable monthly expense that offers significant peace of mind.
How Do You Get Renter’s Insurance?

There are several ways students living at Rambler Riverfront or other off-campus apartments near Purdue can get renter’s insurance:
- Landlord Insurance
- Your Parent’s Policy
- Your Own Policy
The option you choose depends on your eligibility and how much coverage you’re looking for.
1. Landlord Insurance
Some communities offer an insurance program you can enroll in that meets their minimum coverage requirements. Be sure to read the details carefully to understand what is and isn’t covered especially when it comes to personal belongings.
Rambler Riverfront requires residents to carry renter’s insurance with at least $100,000 in liability coverage. Our team can help guide you towards options that meet this requirement, or you can enroll in Homebody, our liability waiver program that provides you coverage for $15 a month.
2. Parents’ Homeowners Policy
In some cases, your parents’ homeowners insurance may extend limited coverage to your belongings while you’re living away at school. This coverage is often capped at a percentage of their total personal property limit, especially if you live off-campus, so it’s important to check with your parent’s insurance provider and confirm that it meets your lease requirements.
3. Your Own Individual Policy
Many students choose to purchase their own renter’s insurance policy. There are numerous affordables providers that allow you to customize coverage amounts and deductibles based on your needs. Most policies can be purchased online in just a few minutes.
