You’ll find features like expansive fitness centers, resort-style pools, gaming lounges, coworking spaces, rooftop areas and a wide variety of study rooms. Inside your unit, you may see upgrades like large windows, quartz countertops, modern furniture and smart-home touches.

If having access to modern amenities is important to you, exploring newer developments might be the right move.

Con: Moving Fees and Expenses

One of the most challenging parts of moving is the cost that comes with it. Between renting a U-Haul, hiring movers, paying for a storage unit during transition periods or buying supplies the costs are important to consider.

Plus, initial first-time move-in fees at new apartments like the application fee, admin fee, parking deposits, pet fees and more can bump up your initial expenses. If you’re staying within a strict budget, these extra costs are important to consider.

Pro: Fresh Connections and Community

A new development not only offers new amenities but also provides a new community of students.

While a sense of community exists among neighbors in any student apartment, being the inaugural group in a building amplifies the bond. You and your neighbors can help establish the culture of the community and collectively take pride in the new location.

If you wish to continue living with your current roommate(s), you can always do so in a new apartment. However, if you’re wanting to branch out or change the number of people you’re living with, you may need to move to a new space that accommodates your preferred layout. In this case, relocating may make the most sense.

Con: Adjustment to a New Location

Moving to a new apartment, no matter how modern or well-designed, can come with an adjustment period. You may need to learn new routes to campus, figure out grocery stores or coffee shops nearby and adapt to a different atmosphere.

Renewing Your Student Apartment Lease in West Lafayette

Pro: Familiarity and Comfort

When you choose to renew your lease, you’re choosing to stay in a comfortable and familiar environment. You already have a good understanding of your property’s amenities, staff and community. There will be fewer surprises, and you know exactly what you’re signing up for.

Con: Same Environment

By renewing your lease, you’re choosing to stay in the same environment. While having the same staff and amenities can provide comfort, it may also come with a lack of novelty. Depending on when your building was constructed, the amenities may not be as modern or efficient as those in newer developments.

Pro: Saving on Moving Fees

Arguably one of the best perks about renewing your lease is the ability to leave all your belongings in your apartment. Since you will stay in your unit, there is no time or money spent on packing and moving.

Plus, since many Purdue student leases have gaps between move-out and move-in dates, renewing allows you to stay in your apartment during this period. This can eliminate the need for temporary housing or storage. Just be sure to ask your property about their renewal policy.

Con: Potential Rent Increase

Most student housing properties raise rent each year to keep up with market costs. For this reason, choosing to remain in the same apartment may cost more than it did the previous year. If you’re interested in renewing, ask your leasing team about pricing for the upcoming year as early as possible.

Pro: Maintaining Roommate Dynamics

Roommates can have a significant impact on your college experience. Many Purdue students prefer to keep the same set of roommates for multiple years. If you want to stay with the same group, renewing your lease may be the easiest option since you won’t have to search for a new layout that fits everyone.

Moving vs. Renewing: Final Considerations

At the end of the day, you’ll want to ask yourself:

  • Do I like my property’s management?
  • Does the property feel safe?
  • Do I need parking?
  • Does the rate work for my budget?
  • Can I afford something newer?
  • Is moving worth the hassle?
  • Does this apartment still fit my needs?

We hope this article has shed light on the considerations involved in deciding between renewing your lease and moving to a new student apartment near Purdue.
