Purdue Transfer & Exchange Programs

While transfer and exchange students are often grouped together, their experiences at Purdue can be quite different.

Transfer students typically enroll at Purdue permanently and complete the remainder of their degree as Boilermakers. Exchange students, on the other hand, usually study at Purdue for one semester or one academic year before returning to their home university.

Because of this difference in length of stay, housing priorities often vary. Many transfer students look for long-term housing they can continue living in for multiple years, while exchange students often prioritize already furnished apartments, convenient locations and a simple leasing process.

Transfer Students

Transferring to a new university can be exciting, but it also comes with challenges. Learning a new campus, meeting people and adjusting academically all happen at once.

To help make that transition easier, Purdue offers several resources for transfer students. Students have access to orientation programs, academic advising, success coaching and campus involvement opportunities designed specifically to help transfer students feel connected during their first semesters at Purdue.

Exchange Students

Purdue’s International Students and Scholars (ISS) office provides support for exchange students before they arrive and throughout their time on campus.

ISS assists students with immigration guidance, orientation, cultural programming and campus resources to help make the transition to life in West Lafayette as smooth as possible.

Purdue also offers numerous student organizations, cultural groups and international events where exchange students can meet other Boilermakers and build friendships throughout the school year.

While many first-year Purdue students choose to live on campus, residence hall availability can be limited for transfer and exchange students. That’s why we’ve created this guide covering everything you need to know about off-campus housing options near Purdue.

What Types of Off-Campus Housing Are Available Near Purdue?

There are three main types of off-campus housing available near Purdue:

Student Housing Apartments

Rambler Riverfront is located at 224 E. State St., just a short walk from Purdue’s campus.

Student housing apartments are communities specifically designed for college students and are typically located close to campus. These communities focus on convenience, flexibility and amenities that support student life.

Most student apartments operate using individual leases, meaning each resident signs their own lease and is only responsible for their assigned bedroom and portion of the rent.

Apartments are typically fully furnished and available in a variety of floor plans ranging from studios to five-bedroom layouts.

Many communities also offer amenities like fitness centers, study lounges, resort-style pools, club rooms and coffee shops to create an environment that supports both academics and social life.

Traditional Apartments

Traditional apartments aren’t designed specifically for students and are often located farther from campus. While they can provide additional privacy, they typically offer fewer student-focused amenities.

Traditional apartments generally use joint leases, meaning all roommates share responsibility for the entire rent, utilities and any damages.

Traditional Houses

Rental houses are another popular option, especially for upperclassmen and graduate students who already have roommates in mind.

Like traditional apartments, houses are generally unfurnished and operate under joint leases. While they often provide more living space, tenants are also responsible for furnishing the home and coordinating rent and utilities together.

When Should I Start Looking for Housing?

As soon as you commit to Purdue, it’s a good idea to begin your housing search. Whether you’re planning to live on campus or off campus, your chances of finding your ideal housing are much better when you begin early.

Transfer and exchange students follow Purdue’s standard housing application process for on-campus residence halls. However, incoming freshmen generally receive priority for university housing, meaning available spaces for transfer students may be more limited.

Because of this, many transfer and exchange students choose to explore off-campus housing near Purdue.

Off-campus apartments are also competitive. Many begin leasing nearly a year before move-in, so waiting too long can reduce both availability and flexible pricing options.

How Much Does It Cost to Live Near Purdue?

Housing costs near Purdue vary depending on the type of housing, location, amenities and floor plan you choose.

Living on campus includes residence hall costs plus a required meal plan.

Off-campus student apartments vary based on community, number of roommates and apartment style. While student apartments may have higher monthly rent than some traditional apartments, many include furnishings, internet, amenities and individual leasing within the monthly cost.

Traditional apartments and rental houses may offer lower base rent, but students should also budget for furniture, utilities and other monthly expenses that are often billed separately.
